Fireworks and More Family Visitors

On the eve of June 24th each year, Barcelona celebrates the Festival of Sant Joan, welcoming in the summer with a huge BANG (many bangs, actually!).  For this day only it is legal to purchase and set off fireworks freely, mostly happening at the beach.  OH…MY…GOSH…  You would not believe the utter and complete lack of safety within the free range of the law…beginning at dusk on June 23rd and going ALL through the night.  Of course, my family of boys bought a load of fireworks at one of the temporary kiosks that sell them around the city, and we created our own little fireworks displays until about 1:00am…in the midst of everyone else doing the same.  I was happy to finish and get out of the utter chaos of explosions happening all around us; one major firework (not ours!) even flew into a crowd of people---gratefully, no one was hurt!

One of our friends, Philipp, who owns Refresca Tea (our favorite drink spot), came by to see our our fireworks, then we walked back together along the beach and past the marina...

Hanging out near the marina while Ray and Philipp stop and chat

Our last day of Spanish classes with Christian and Carmen

We played games...guess who is the most competitive in our family?!?!

First we had to find two hidden balls of the same color.  Then we were given a corresponding "personality".
Jacob received a bizarre one...

Then we had to find several posted pictures in the next room, that related to our given personality.

...then blow up balloons...

...(do one other activity not pictured here) and do a writing assignment for our personality
using the subjunctive verb tense.  Jacob won!!

Chillin'

Then we played another competitive game.  Ray always aims to win, even against his wife.  :)

Ray is always making sure he understands the rules...so that no one else breaks them!

A couple last photos together at school...

The last day of dance classes...but "dance intensive" camp is throughout the month of July...

We found this cool shop that takes a 3-D image of you, and they create an individual miniature statue!  We got one done each of the boys, but it takes four weeks to complete.  Here the boys are getting their images done.

Ray's sister, Gina, and her daughter/our niece Alycia, came to visit.  We had such a great time together...telling stories and laughing many hours of each day!  Of course, a photo in front of the big city park fountain...

These are the Roman ruins a short walk from our apartment.

While Gina and Alycia decided to hit the sack early after a day and a half of travel and sight-seeing, we gathered with some friends for a fabulous multi-course dinner on Carmen and Dani's huge terrace.  Dinners and parties here go late...we arrived at 9:30 (yes, the actual invitation time) and left about 2:30 in the morning.

Back to our favorite restaurant, Flax & Kale, with Gina and Alycia.  Here is a new item on the brunch menu...

Gina, Alycia, and Jacob

Next to Ray, is Ramón, who along with his wife and adult children, own the restaurant.  We have become friends with these wonderful people...thanks to Ray who is always connecting with fellow restaurateurs.

The boys and I finally made it to one of Gaudí's houses, La Pedrera, which he was commissioned to do by a wealthy family.  This family lived in one part, while the rest of the building was apartments for rental income.

Nicholas standing in the interior of the building, which opens up to the sky...

Looking up from the interior...  Gaudí wanted both the interior and exterior of the apartments to have light.

Atop the ROOF, which is the first place they send you for this tour, there are interesting "sculptures".

See Gaudí's La Sagrada Familia church in the background?
If you stand in the right spot, you can see it through that archway, which was his intention.

Looking down from the rooftop to the interior of the building...

...must do a "freeze" at a the top of this cool building...

After the rooftop, they direct you to the attic area of the building, which is now used as a museum.

A great model of La Pedrera...

After the museum, you tour one of the apartments with all its unique features.  Gaudí even designed much of the furniture and other details like the door handles that were economically designed to fit your hand comfortably.

This is one piece of furniture...very comfortable wooden chairs...
also ergonomically designed to the body's sitting position.

I was enthralled with this photo people watching a bullfight long ago...
Isn't it crazy how these kids look like they could fall out into the bull ring??

Gina and Jacob playing ball in the ocean...

We had a great time with Gina and Alycia and wish they could have stayed longer!
